University at Buffalo Neurosurgery (UBNS) is excited to announce it has appointed Dr. Laszlo Mechtler, a neurology partner in the community, as volunteer faculty. This new partnership furthers UBNS’ commitment to neuroscience education and research, which helps us improve patient outcomes.

Dr. Mechtler has displayed unwavering dedication to patient care. His work, from neurology and oncology to groundbreaking research in cannabis medicine, is driven by a deep commitment to bettering the lives of his patients and profound compassion for their well-being.

Dr. Mechtler holds leadership roles at several prestigious institutions – a testament to his work and significant influence in the medical field. He is currently the Chief Medical Officer of the Dent Neurologic Institute, the largest outpatient neuroscience center in the United States. Dr. Mechtler is also the Chief of Neurology and Oncology at Roswell Park Cancer Center and a Professor of Neurology and Oncology at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Mechtler is also the Founder/Director of the MIND Institute in Budapest HUNGARY.

With board certifications in Neurology, Neuroimaging, Neuro-Oncology, and Headache Medicine, Dr. Mechtler’s work and expertise have been fundamental in shaping the field of neurology. His pivotal roles in the American Society of Neuroimaging (ASN), where he served as President for 2 terms, and also serving as President the Hungarian Medical Association of America (HMAA), has helped to propel the field forward. He has also played a vital role on the Executive Committee for BrainPAC through the American Academy of Neurology (AAN). Currently, he serves on the Board of Directors for the International Headache Society (IHS), and Genomate Health and advisory board member for NeuroDiscovery AI solidifying his reputation as a leader in the medical community.

Dr. Mechtler’s influence extends beyond traditional medical boundaries, particularly in his pioneering research on medical marijuana. As the Director of the Dent Cannabis Clinic, he has spearheaded groundbreaking trials on the effectiveness of medical marijuana in alleviating headaches and various neurologic disorders. This research, which has garnered global recognition, has also resulted in the certification of over 15,000 patients through the New York State Medical Marijuana program, significantly enhancing patient care and demonstrating the transformative potential of his work.

He has authored multiple books in neuroimaging while publishing chapters and abstracts related to ground-breaking research and neurologic disorders. He has spent his career training over 60 neuroimaging fellows and hundreds of residents.

Dr. Mechtler’s commitment to advancing neurosurgical techniques and improving patient outcomes is evident in his ongoing collaboration with UBNS. His leadership and expertise are invaluable in addressing complex neuro-oncology and neurosurgical cases, further solidifying his reputation as a medical innovator.
