University of Buffalo’s Ellen Goldbaum spoke with Dr. Elad Levy about his journey from rowing his way into college to becoming a renowned brain surgeon.
In a recent episode of the UBNow podcast, Dr. Levy recounted being a member of a national rowing team who wanted to go professional, but after receiving a summer scholarship for neurosurgery research, his goals shifted, and he found his passion.
“It’s sort of that last frontier of the unknown of the human body, right?” Dr. Levy says about his interest. “We really are only now exploring the intricacies of the brain.”
Fueled by his passion over the years, Dr. Levy has contributed to setting new standards for outpatient surgery, including performing the first U.S-based outpatient ambulatory carotid artery stent alongside members of the UBNS team. This surgical feat helped showcase how tools such as the Neuroguard IEP system and the AI-powered Hyperfine Swoop can help increase the quality of care while being outside of the hospital.
Dr. Levy has also presented a feasibility study about the brain-computer interface, with work having been done by the UBNS and Gates Vascular Institute team. Specifically, they assessed Synchron's endovascular BCI results during the COMMAND trial. For his abstract on this research, Dr. Levy was awarded the Duke Samson Award by the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. This technology allows patients with paralysis to be able to move devices.
