UBNS has been activated as a local research site for a new study by Synchron, a U.S. neurotechnology company, in an effort to restore autonomy in people's lives who are affected by degenerative diseases, such as ALS.

Synchron leads a study using a brain-computer interface (BCI) to study the brain in patients with paralysis in order to help them restore voluntary movement. It is a minimally invasive study that helps patients connect with their bodies to perform voluntary movements. The system helps when a person intends to move a body part, like their arm, but they cannot.

UBNS collaborated with Synchron in an earlier trial to evaluate the BCI’s feasibility. During that project, the team 3D printed precise models of patients’ anatomy to determine where and how to optimally place the device to ensure the procedure can be performed flawlessly. In addition to this innovative modeling, UBNS surgeons performed a third of the implantations in the preliminary trial.

Now, Synchron is continuing this research through the Independence Through Endovascular Neuroprosthetic Technology (INTENT) Study. UBNS has been activated as a local implantation and clinical research site for the trial. 

This study will continue to evaluate the BCI’s safety while assessing how it may improve the quality of life for those living with motor impairments. By continuing this work with Synchron, UBNS will remain at the forefront of neurosurgical innovation and help open the door to new possibilities for patients living with degenerative diseases.
