Clinical Research & Trials

Our faculty conduct clinical trials and studies in cutting-edge treatments and therapies.

We are the only neurosurgical group in Western New York with FDA approval to conduct device-related clinical trials for acute stroke. As an extension of our clinical practice, we actively participate in clinical trials to test the safety & efficacy of innovative intracranial devices in treating a wide range of neurosurgical disorders, including arterial stenosis, aneurysms, and stroke. As a result those patients who consent to participate have the advantage of being treated with advanced therapies not yet available on the general market. Our residents and fellows also take part in conducting research, gaining professional experience while working to extend the frontiers of medical knowledge.

Clinical trials are research studies that rely on human volunteers to answer specific medical questions related to the treatment of disease. The results of clinical trials help determine the safest and most effective medical therapies, and shape the development of the next generation of medical treatments.

UBNS actively participates in four types of clinical trials, which represent a major component of our overall research program:

Investigational Device Exemptions (IDEs)
Humanitarian Device Exemptions (HDEs)
Post-market Approval (PMA)
Physician-Sponsored

For more information on clinical trials, contact Ellen Carl, UBNS Research Study Coordinator, at (716) 929-9643 or ecarl@ubns.com
