Functional Neurosurgery

The structure of our Functional Neurosurgery service places heavy emphasis on clinical and surgical evaluation and treatment of patients with movement disorders, medically refractory epilepsy, and pain. Our Comprehensive Movement Disorders Center offers highly-specialized, individualized care to patients with Parkinson’s disease, spasticity, and other chronic movement disorders. The team holds the distinction of being the most experienced provider of intrathecal baclofen therapy in Western New York, and is the only group in the region to offer deep brain stimulation (DBS) to treat tremor symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, and multiple sclerosis.  Most recently, the team has begun to collaborate with experts in the field of psychiatry to one day soon offer deep brain stimulation as a treatment for severe obsessive-compulsive and depressive disorders.

Surgical treatments offered include thalamic deep brain stimulator implants and thalamotomy for control of essential tremor and tremor secondary to Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis, and subthalamic deep brain stimulator implants and pallidotomy for control of bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor, and dyskinesias secondary to Parkinson’s disease.

Neurosurgical Conditions Treated:

  • Movement Disorders
  • Parkinson’s Disease
  • Baclofen / Pain Pumps
  • Spinal Cord Stimulation
  • Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)
